89: FF #9
These two panels are technically non-consecutive, but they paint an excellent picture together. By Issue 9, Lee and Kirby have decided to put “realism” into full-swing. I don’t mean, of course, that they’re doing away with dark wizard scientists and space aliens. What this does mean is that the FF are now short on money, which makes sense considering the amount of ridiculous gizmos they’re always building (and the fact that I’ve never seen any of them go to work).
Reed, in his traditional bouts of (er-hem) “logic,” claims that the FF really can only use their superpowers to make a profit through sideshows or crime. I’m pretty sure that can’t possibly be the case, but maybe you disagree.
Either way, this issue proves that fund-less superheroes can be interesting, but I still think that won’t be perfected until a year after this issue, when Spider-Man swings into town.
